German police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal in 2007 have been searching a garden plot in the northern city of Hanover in connection with their investigation, prosecutors said.

Julia Meyer, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office in Braunschweig, confirmed media reports on Tuesday that police investigating the case had been at the site since Monday with an excavator.

“The procedure is taking place in connection with our investigation regarding Maddie McCann,” she told the Associated Press.

Madeleine was three when she disappeared from an apartment on a family holiday in the seaside town of Praia da Luz in Portugal’s Algarve region.

German authorities said last month they had identified a 43-year-old German man as a suspect in the case and were investigating him on suspicion of murder.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, but he has been widely identified by the media as Christian Brückner. He was last registered as living in the city of Braunschweig, about 40 miles (70km) from Hanover.

The suspect, who is in prison in Germany serving an unrelated sentence for drug trafficking, spent many years in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz around the time of Madeleine’s disappearance, and has two previous convictions for “sexual contact with girls”, authorities have said.
